Monday Part 1: Digging in the Dirt

We're just sitting here visiting and feeling terrific about a wonderful day of hard work, progress, and fellowship.

The hard work refers to our construction activity today. We were on the job by 8:30 and job one was completing the excavation of a large, deep hole that will become the septic system for the new group home. This hole is 7 feet deep and as long as a small car!

Four of us jumped in with shovels and we started digging in the rocky soil, tossing the dirt up and over our heads. There were all kinds of rocks and boulders, and it was our job to finish the hole which was started by a backhoe.

It was really just a precursor for a full day that consisted of 2 main activities: moving dirt with shovels, and tossing boulders with our hands. After we finished the big hole, the rest of the day was spent backfilling and grading the foundation, spreading and moving huge piles dumped in place by a dump truck.

The pictures tell it all.

Special mention goes to John, who had his own special project with the terraced irrigation system and planting, which played into his "green thumb".

We finally finished at 4:00 and wow, we were pooped!

So we went up the hill to our quarters, to prepare for dinner, which is Part 2 of this blog...
